Race to the End of the Earth

Adventure is a dish best served Cold

You won't see this exhibit in Night at the Museum, because it's brand spankin new! The American Museum of Natural History is enlightening us once again. The moment you enter this race you will be transported into a world of adventure, science, awesome victories, and ice cold tragedy. The exhibit follows the exploits of two explorers, Norwegian Roald Amundsen and Captain Robert Falcon Scott of the British Royal Navy, both of whom had their sights set on the same goal, the South Pole.

Each man had a unique vision on how to attain their goals. Follow a member of the Norwegian or British team when you receive a "character card" to learn about individual experiences during the expedition. Watch actual footage from their journey and marvel at artifacts like compasses, maps, paintings, and tools. When you step through the exhibition gaze upon the full scale model replicas of the teams sleeping quarters and work areas.

This wasn't just a race though. The British wanted to conduct actual scientific research throughout their journey. Learn about the specimens they collected as well as the weather conditions recorded, some as low as -77°F. Interesting Fact: Standard compasses tend to give you inaccurate readings near the South Pole, want to know why? Do you know the optimal temperatures for sliding a sled across ice? Should you get emotionally attached to the sled dogs helping you out during your perilous journey? Probably not.

I won't be spoiling the ending by divulging who won the race, or if tragedy befell either team. Instead I recommend that you experience the adventure you didn't even know existed, before it gets turned into a movie.

Open every week Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday from Sat., May 29 until Sun., January 2, 10:00am.
