Rooftop Films Honors New York City

New York Non-Fiction Short Films at New Design High School

Until Septemeber 20 of 2010, New York City dwellers have the opportunity to watch great movies on the many rooftops of our wonderful skyline. I thought it would be fitting to attend their short film program at New Design High School in the lower east side, which of course featured documentaries about New York City.

New Design High School basically embodies what it's like to live in an urban environment. Beautiful graffiti are splashed all over the walls, ramps are scattered all around the wide space, and basketball hoops are placed in the corners. The whole roof is fenced in but the marvelous views are still very visible through the metal. Aside from the lack of alcoholic beverages, it was an almost perfect atmosphere for this very summer, very New York activity.

There were 10 films shown, all of which had their own story to tell about this city and its inhabitants. The second film, entitled The Commoners, showcased the history behind the bird only behind the pigeon in population, called the starling. In Harlem Mother, we follow a middle aged woman who remembers her son, a casualty of the violence that seems to persist in the streets of upper Manhattan. Hair Man featured a less serious topic about the mystery hair man from Williamsburg, who has an usually clean receding hair line which leads to a very volumized and neatly placed pile of straight hair.

The films were diverse, well done, and very refreshing in a hot summer night. There are plenty of films and rooftops left in their cache, so if you get a chance, check out Rooftop Films before it starts to get cold.

duray-I kind of feel like the same person except more time has gone by.I hate to say that I feel like an adult now. I have to admit I wish I was still 18 , After all , even through the time while I was representing taht wild kid ,I really wasn't.I was just living my life . I was just not making movies at the time.-Leonardo --patek philippe replica
